Calculating the body mass index
The body mass index (BMI) is a value that determines, based on height and weight of a person, the more healthy range of weight that you can have. This constant is calculated from the beginning of the year 1980. To properly interpret this result we must take into account the following intervals:
  • A result between 18.5 and 25 is listed as healthy.
  • A BMI below 18.5 indicates thinness, malnutrition or any health problem
  • A BMI above 25 indicates overweight.
  • A BMI of 30 indicates mild obesity, and above 40 are morbid obesity that may require surgery.
These ranges are applicable to adults between 25 and 34 years, and increase by one point for every decade over 25. In this way, a BMI of 28 is normal for people of 55-65 years.
